Obituary of Panagiotis (Peter) Vergiris
It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the sudden passing of Panagiotis (Peter) Vergiris on September 13th, 2020 in his 70th year. Cherished husband of Eleni (Kokkinakos). Loving father of Maria (Perry) Bujouves, Steve (Eleni) Vergiris, Peter (Lisa) Vergiris. Proud grandfather of Evangelos, Panayiotis, Alexandros, Panayoti, Sofia, Penelope and Marilena.
Dear brother of Theodoros (late Georgia), Georgios (Styliani), Georgia (late Dimitri) Revelas, Anastasia (Anargyrios) Krommidas, and Elias (Menia). Beloved brother-in-law of Elias (Kathy) Kokkinakos, and many nieces, nephews and cousins in Canada, US, Australia and Greece.
Peter was born on February 10th, 1951 in Dafni, Lakonia, Greece. From very humble beginnings, he set forth to Canada from the very young age of 16 following his older brother to pursue a better life. At the age of 24 he met and married his beloved wife Eleni and established their family of 3 children in London, ON. They recently happily celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary.
He spent 53 years working in the restaurant industry. Peter will forever be remembered as a face of Downtown London at the iconic Mascot Restaurant in the heart of the city which he and his brothers established along with their families. Peter also spent 8 years at the BMO Centre Restaurant working alongside his wife Eleni.
In his spare time, he volunteered countless hours at the Hellenic Community Centre. He also devoted his time to being on the Hellenic Church Council as well as the Greek School Board. When he wasn’t busy volunteering, he loved playing his bouzouki and listening to music. Peter will be remembered as always having a smile on his face and how committed he was to his family and his community.
Peter's love and generosity touched all whom he met. He was a gentleman who was never hesitant to lend a helping hand to anyone. His devotion to his children was exhibited every day through his tireless sacrifices and deeds. Always taking time to offer advice, encouragement and support. His gentle smile and softspoken words were a comfort to his grandchildren who loved their endless walks and sleepovers with their Pappou & Yiayia. Peter’s laugh was infectious and he knew how to perfectly entertain his friends. He was always the first to the dance floor and the last to leave.
There are not enough words to express the gratitude we have for all our family, friends and neighbours for all their love, support and generosity during this difficult time, especially to the Chadha family for being there with us. A heartfelt thank you to all the First Aid Responders and all the staff at Victoria Hospital for all their efforts and compassion. Peter’s beautiful and kind soul will forever be missed. May his memory be eternal.
