Obituary of Ellen Louise Harriet Russell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ellen Russell on February 6, 2025, at Victoria Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. Ellen was born on February 9, 1935, in Shamattawa Port, Manitoba. As a child she was known for her free-spirited nature and her love for animals. Ellen became a devoted nurse in long-term care, displaying a profound passion for helping those in need. Her caring hands and nurturing soul touched the lives of the residents and families she cared for. Ellen carried a steady presence, and her calm demeanor brought a sense of security to everyone she encountered. Her soothing nature and gentle approach to life made her a beloved figure in her family, community, and beyond.

As a mother to six children, twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Ellen was the matriarch of her family. She was never more than a phone call away to offer advice or help you solve a problem. She quickly earned the name Baby Whisperer to those lucky enough to have witnessed her gift in soothing the most restless child. Ellen loved fiercely and taught us the importance and power of kindness. She will be fondly remembered for her deep passion for music, particularly Engelbert Humperdinck. Whenever there was music, you knew there would be an impromptu dance party in the living room. Her spirit was contagious, and before long she would have everyone dancing and the house ringing with laughter. Ellen was a talented cook, and her goulash was a family favourite that brought warmth and comfort to the table.

Ellen never met a stranger and made friends fast wherever she went, blessing our lives with moments of joy, laughter, and love. She carried herself with immeasurable grace and strength, always putting others before herself and embodying the true essence of a compassionate heart. Her light will continue to shine in the lives of her family and friends, and her legacy of love, care, and grace will live on through all who had the honor of knowing her.

The family is forever thankful to the compassionate staff at Victoria Hospital Palliative Care Unit for the kindness and support they provided in an environment where dignity and peace are prioritized.

Per Ellen’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Logan Funeral Home (519) 433-6181 and a Celebration of Life will take place in the spring.

A tree will be planted, by the Logan Funeral Home, as a living memorial to Ellen Louise Harriet Russell

May you rest in peace, Ellen, and dance in heaven as you did in life.
