Obituary of Stratos Makris

On March 1, 2025 at home, surrounded by his loving family, Stratos Makris passed away peacefully in his 86th year.

He leaves behind his devoted wife Aglaia, whom he shared 57 years, and children: Vasiliki (Jim) Babalis, Efrocine Makris, and Georgia (Lefteris) Vilos.  He has been reunited with his beloved son Stefanos (2022) and daughter-in-law Nicole (2004).  Stratos was also deeply connected to his late siblings sister Eleni, brother Aggelis, and the special bonds he shared with his nephews, Jim Demopoulos and the late Louis Demopoulos.

Born August 2, 1939, in Tselepakos, Greece, Stratos was the son of the late Stefanos and Vasiliki Makris. From humble beginnings, he immigrated to Canada in 1965, where he worked at various restaurants before becoming the proud co-owner of Heywood’s Family Restaurant in Centralia, Ontario with the late Leonidas Tsionis.

Stratos married Aglaia in 1967, and together they built a loving home and a strong family foundation, deeply rooted in London and the Greek community.  Stratos was a man of simplicity and quiet strength, always prioritizing his family above all else.  He held his head high, and took great pride in what he and Aglaia achieved through hard work and dedication, ensuring their children had the best life possible.

In his later years, his greatest joy was found in his grandchildren -- Xavier Makris and Arkadia and Apollo Vilos.  The three of them brought him purpose, energy and laughter and he dedicated himself to passing on to them the core foundations and values that meant so much to him.

Thank you Baba and Papou for all your wisdom and the immense stability you brought to our lives each and every day.  We will do all that we can to continue your legacy and ensure you are never forgotten.  You will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Ontario Health at Home, Dr. Lauren Gurland, Alex Bautista, London Paramedic Services, ER staff at LHSC, VH campus, and Voyago for helping to fulfill Stratos’ final wish to pass peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.

Visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 131 Southdale Rd. W., London, Ontario on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 10-11 a.m.

Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m.
