Dr. Smith made me feel valued before I had anything to offer the anesthesiology profession. His unique humour made long hospital days markedly better. Dave had a knack for identifying the comical absurdity in otherwise stressful scenarios; he kept me laughing throughout some challenging times. Dave had a quick mind - it was impossible to resist joining in with his quiet, witty banter. Dave had a true understanding of the human condition. Thank-you Dave for the kindness you extended to me and the knowledge you passed on. You will not be forgotten ~ Jenny Smallwood

I was one of many residents lucky enough to be mentored by Dave while training in London. He was always thoughtful with a wealth of knowledge that few have, and I have always strived to attain since. He was an amazing clinician and devoted to the profession and educating residents.
Not only was he a mentor but a kind and generous friend. Whether it was opening his doors and hosting the residents during the summer or helping with oral exam prep he was always generous with his time.
He became a close and cherished friend, whether it was taking my mind off having just written the licensing exam, or helping and housing my family after selling our house, he gave generously. He will be dearly missed, and may he find peace in his voyages in the undiscovered country.

Dr.David Smith was a truly a wonderful man. From being a passionate medical educator to a brilliant mind in the operating room, he was also the most grounded person.
As a resident under his watchful eye in the operating, there was never a dump question about anesthesia that he couldn’t answer. His knowledge of the field of anethesia was truly remarkable and his dedication to resident learning was second to none. Dave… thanks for everything you did, every patient you helped and for making me as well as many other anesthesiologist stronger for generations to come.
We will miss you dearly!

I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been mentored by such a remarkable person. Dave was a source of wisdom, encouragement, and inspiration. He was one of the smartest men I’ve ever come across, but what made him truly remarkable was that I never felt intimidated or judged. Dave had an incredible way of sharing his vast knowledge without ever making anyone feel small. Instead, he always made me feel valued, supported, and capable of achieving more than I thought possible.
Rest in peace, Dave. You will always be missed, but your legacy will live on in the countless lives you touched.
