Obituary of Shirley Elizabeth Rice (née Thompson)
With great sadness, the family of Shirley Rice announce her passing in London, on Friday, January 2, 2026, in her 88th year.
Beloved wife and best friend of the late Stewart H. Rice (2007). Greatly missed by her daughter Sandra Rice of London, and son, Brian Rice and his wife Lynda of Ingersoll. Wonderful Grammie to Alex (Katelyn) and Michael Rice all of Ingersoll. Survived by sister Mary and brother-in-law Jim Dougall of St. Marys, her sister-in-law Ruth Rice of Burlington, step-sister-in-law Pat Rolston of St. Marys, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Inman and Helene Thompson, sister Ruth Jackson, brother Bob Thompson, brother-in-law Douglas Rice, and step-brother Ken Rolston.
When Shirley was a youngster, her family moved from their farm in Downie Township, Perth County to Stratford. After completing high school, she worked at a law firm in Stratford until her marriage to Stewart, eventually settling down in London where she worked at the law firm of Walter Cooper. She and Dad spent several summers (with much help from family and friends) building a cottage on the Montreal River at Latchford, where many good times were had and many wonderful friends were made. She was a woman who loved her family and friends, the north, cooking, sewing, the outdoors, and reading. She attended St. Jude’s Anglican Church in London for nearly 60 years, although in the last years virtually.
Visitation will be held at Logan Funeral Home, 371 Dundas Street, London, Ontario (between Waterloo & Colborne St.), on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 from 6-9 p.m.
Graveside service and burial to be announced for spring 2026.
Those who wish may make memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice in memory of Mrs. Rice.
