Obituary of Edith Erika Fama

Edith (Edy) Erika Fama (née Hermann) a resident of Ashwood Manor, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2026, at London Health Sciences Centre, at the age of 82.

Born on March 18, 1943, in Soldau, Germany, Edy emigrated to Canada at the age of 11 with her family where she went on to build a life defined by hard work, compassion, volunteerism and deep devotion to family. She moved from Aylmer to London, where she established her life.  She maintained her heritage and German language through her attendance at the German Canadian Club.

Edy was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Fama; her parents, Otto and Meta Hermann; and her brother, Manfred Hermann, and her late life companion Manfred Bauer.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Jeffrey Mathers; her sister-in-law, Susan Hermann; her niece, Tobi (Rishi) Siew; and her nephews, Keith (Jen), and Stephen Hermann. She was a devoted and cherished Oma to Isabel, Devi, Konnor, Max, and Zander, who were the light of her life.

Edy spent 55 years as a hairdresser, a trade she truly loved. She was passionate about cooking and baking, and her table was always open and full — a place where everyone was welcome. She also enjoyed dining out, attending theatre, spending meaningful time with family, and travelling — especially to Las Vegas, a city she loved for its energy and excitement. In her later years, Edy became known as the “Canadian Mom”, hosting countless youth who studied as international students in London.

With a wide circle of neighbours and friends, Edy was known for her magnetic character, warmth, and acceptance of others. Her quick wit and strong sense of humour filled rooms with laughter and made people feel instantly at ease.  Edy will be remembered for her resilience, kindness, vibrant spirit, and the enduring legacy of love and connection she leaves behind. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Edy had a passion for animals, especially for dogs and birds. In keeping with her wishes, donations in her memory may be made to the London Humane Society.

Cremation has taken place and interment will occur at St Peter’s Cemetery with a graveside ceremony for immediate family.  An open house to celebrate Edy’s life will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2026. Time and location to be announced on the Evans Funeral Home website.
