Obituary of Stavroula Georgopoulos

Stella (Stavroula) Georgopoulos (Alikakos)

January 17, 1932 – February 26, 2026

Age 94

It is with profound love and deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Stella (Stavroula) Georgopoulos (Alikakos) on February 26, 2026, at the age of 94.

Born on January 17, 1932, in Polovitsa, a village near Sparta, Greece, Stella’s life was marked by courage from the very beginning. In 1956, she left her war-scarred homeland and immigrated alone to Canada, arriving in Halifax without speaking English, armed only with faith, determination, and an unshakeable will to survive. She began working immediately as a domestic and caregiver, and later that year settled in London, Ontario, where she built the foundation for generations to come.

In a new and unfamiliar country, Stella became the quiet but powerful Mater Familias of her family. She paved the way for her brothers and sister to join her, opening her home to relatives and newcomers who arrived alone and uncertain. Her house became a place of refuge, guidance, warmth, and strength — headquarters for many who were beginning their Canadian story.

Life was not always easy, yet Stella faced every adversity with resilience, dignity, humour, and a radiant smile. Known for her striking dark curls and luminous presence, she lit up every room she entered. Beneath her warmth was a woman of extraordinary determination who stood up to the world on her own and created opportunity where there was none.

Beloved wife of Bill Georgopoulos, Stella was a devoted mother to her only daughter, Pamela Georgopoulos, whom she raised with fierce love, strength, and unwavering support. She took immense pride in seeing her daughter flourish and build a life of purpose and independence.

She was the proud and adoring Yiayia of Elyssa, Natasha, and Andreas,  the great joys of her life. To her family she was “Voula,” to her friends “Stella,” and to all the grandchildren and their friends, simply “Yiayia.”

She is lovingly remembered by her siblings John (Casandra) Alikakos, Tasia (Peter) Fragakos, and Nick (Pope) Alikakos, along with her many nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends in Canada and Greece. She was predeceased by her parents, Maria and Stelios Alikakos, and her sister Olga.

Deeply rooted in her Greek Orthodox faith, Stella sang in the church choir and was an active member of the Ladies Philoptochos of London for many years. Her faith sustained her through hardship and gratitude alike.

A master tailor and gifted seamstress, she worked until the age of 88, renowned for her exceptional craftsmanship, elegant design, and impeccable work ethic. Her creativity extended beyond fabric to her beautiful gardens and her welcoming kitchen, where the aromas of lovingly prepared meals expressed what words often did not — her boundless love.

Her life was defined by strength of character, generosity of spirit, and an unwavering commitment to family. She arrived in a foreign land alone, yet she never allowed anyone around her to feel alone.

Though we grieve her loss, we celebrate a life fiercely lived, a woman who blazed a trail for others, and a matriarch whose legacy will continue through the family she nurtured and the love she gave so freely.

The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 131 Southdale Road West, London, Ontario, followed by interment at Woodland Cemetery, 493 Springbank Drive, London, Ontario.
