I have known Morris for most of my life as he was my mother's best friend. As a child, I saw him as this avuncular figure who always had a new sporty car every few years. Growing up with his generosity of spirit and largesse meant I was always immersed in culture. I always had Chapters gift cards or compilation CDs of Mozart on my birthday. It was with Morris that I had my first and only experience eating Kobe sirloin. Morris used to love telling the story of me when I was 10 years old and we were dining at an upscale restaurant in Hong Kong and I picked the most expensive shark's fin soup on the menu. Without him, I'd have no taste. I'd certainly have no taste for all the beauty that life has to offer, and Morris loved everything that made life beautiful: Food, drink, music, literature, art, leisure. He was a true epicure.
The last conversation we had took place on the day of his death. He had invited my husband and me to his place for a civic holiday BBQ, something we have enjoyed partaking in over the years with him, along with Canada Day, Autumn Moon Festival, Christmas Day, and Chinese New Year. These culinary dates became the beacons around which our lives revolved. Morris and my husband loved having long conversations about WWII battles, old movies, and Canadiana while drinking single-malt whiskey. There was so much warmth and merriment cascading from his presence and we will think of those memories fondly.
He was a titan in my life. May he rest in peace.

I first met Morris in Perdido Beach, Alabama, in 1994. We became friends after we travelled together in China in 2010 and stayed close through the years. Morris was an exceptional person with a noble attitude toward all his friends. He was open-minded and had a wonderful sense of humor. In our many talks over the years, we could always find something in common. Even our occasional debates about Napoleon or when we watch movies together were filled with warmth, and those moments will stay in my memory forever.
He treated people kindly and fairly. He loved this world and fought his disease with courage. He also loved food and cooking, which happened to be my passion as well. We often exchanged ideas about how to cook things just right. On almost every occasion, after trying a new dish, we would say, “Oh, it's delicious. Life is beautiful.”
Morris, I miss you.

So sorry to learn of the recent passing of Dr. Morris Karmazyn. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. I got to know Morris and his wife Dr. Marni Moffat when I took up a faculty position at Western in the late 1980’s. Morris and Marni were valued mentors who were a great help to me in launching my research career. Marni’s tragic death in a vehicle accident in 1994 was an extremely hard blow for Morris. When the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology merged with the Department of Physiology in 2002, Morris and I became colleagues in the same department. Scientifically, we shared common interests in the sodium hydrogen exchanger. Morris was widely known for his work on this transporter (known as NHE-1) and its role in cardiac pathologies including ischemia-reperfusion injury. We were always able to recognize Morris’ car, with the distinctive licence plate number “NHE1”. Over the course of his career, Morris made important contributions to the field of cardiovascular pharmacology. Even in retirement, Morris continued to publish, consult, and review for funding agencies and journals. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Morris Karmazyn has passed away. He was one of my best friends.
Initially it was pharmaceutical research that brought us together, but soon there was much, so much more. While he was a worldwide recognized leading scientist in his field, he had such a warm and unique personality that it was always wonderful to be together with him. You could learn a lot from him and he could be demanding. But whenever you were with Morris, you felt relaxed and very much cared for. Just hearing his voice on the phone could have some of that effect.
During the more than 30 years that we knew each other, he became a close friend not just to me but also to my wife Christa. While living in different parts of the world we met very often, for doing work together, but also privately to enjoy our friendship. So, he was in Germany together with us many times for business but also for vacation and birthday celebrations and we came to Canada many times to see Morris and to go to places together. For later this year we had planned to join him on a cruise going on a route that he loved very much. This is not possible anymore.
Morris and our memories of him will always be a part of our lives. We miss him very much and always will. But we are very thankful for the time we have known him. He will stay in our hearts for ever.

Dearest friend and brother Morris,
We have lost one of our greatest friends, and our hearts are broken. We will never forget you. You will live forever in our hearts, our minds, and our memories. There are simply no words to express the depth of our sadness.
You were truly a part of our family, and both of our children loved you dearly. Your kindness, generosity, warmth, and unwavering friendship touched all of our lives in ways that can never be forgotten.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Morris Karmazyn’s passing. It is difficult to put into words how much this loss means to me.
I had the great privilege of joining Dr. Karmazyn’s laboratory as a postdoctoral fellow in 2008. He was far more than an outstanding scientist—he was a remarkable mentor, a compassionate leader, and a genuinely kind person. His wisdom, broad knowledge, and intellectual curiosity inspired everyone around him. At the same time, his warmth, wonderful sense of humor, patience, and understanding made his laboratory a place where people felt valued and supported.
Dr. Karmazyn had a profound impact on my career and on my life. I will always be grateful for his guidance, encouragement, and friendship. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had him as my mentor and friend.
He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to live on through the many students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he touched.

We first met Morris in 2003 in Germany. Since then we shared many wonderful hours in London, Algonquin, Montreal and Sherbrooke and also in Germany in Bad Zwischenahn, Gifhorn, Eschborn and Freinsheim. We had great times together and got to be very good friends.We will miss him sadly.

Morris was my colleague and a good friend for more than 45 years. He was a former CIHR research chair. After Mani's passing, he devoted his life to cardiovascular research and collaborated with several scientists. He was internationally known for his research and had published several scientific papers. He also received several scientific awards and was well respected in his field. He liked cooking, and we used to go to lunch at different restaurants every month. His favourite place was the Vietnamese restaurant. I am going to miss him and his company. RIP, my friend.

I met Morris in 1994 during an international congress. Since then we shared exceptionnal moments in different places in the world. It was always a great joyce for me to meet him and discuss both cardiovascular science and most importantly philosophy of Life !. He visited me many times in Lausanne, Switzerland, and it was always a great pleasure to have him here.
I am very sad. I will miss him a lot.

I know Dr. Morris Karmazyn since 2002. Dr Karmazyn was a good supervisor, amazing mentor, Avid researcher and loving family friend.
It was a pleasure and feel honored to work with him as Research Associate.The last good memory was having lunch with him in May 2025.
Morris will be deeply missed but he will remembered for ever as renowned scientist for his contributions in understanding the mechanisms for developmebt of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure.
My sincere condolences to his family for their huge loss and pray that soul of this noble person rest in peace.

Morris was a cherished and supportive mentor to me when I was completing my PhD under the supervision of the late Dr. Marni Moffat between 1986-1991. He fostered my interest in cardiovascular research and discovery, and taught me the importance of hard work and perseverance. I will fondly remember the many conferences I attended with Marni and Morris in Canada, the USA, and Europe. At my first scientific conference in Boston with Marni and Morris, we ate at a Japanese restaurant. Morris and I each had the special sushi platter - Heaven. It was at that moment that I knew Morris had a fondness for Japanese food. I am truly thankful to Marni and Morris for their support and dedication to my research training. Without them, I would never have the opportunity to be an academic scientist, and later a department chair, Associate Dean, and Interim Dean. Thank you Morris for your guidance, inspiration, and humour.

Professor Karmazyn and his wife Professor Moffat were my professors in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Western Ontario thirty six years ago. The tragic death of his wife shocked us all, most of all him and I saw him a few times afterwards and even in his profound grief he maintained his dignity when we spoke. May the Eternal arrange for you to be amongst the Just, worthy in your virtue and your benevolent acts, and along with your beloved wife enveloped in the balsam of consolation.שלום מורה.
