Ed Hurdle

Obituary of Ed J.D. (Edway) Hurdle

Suddenly, on Friday August 13, 2004, our beloved brother, brother-in-law and Uncle, Ed (Edway) J.D. Hurdle, peacefully left us to join his parents whom he missed so deeply. He was predeceased by his mother Jessie in 2003, his sister-in-law Barbie in 2000 and father Earl in 1993. He is survived by his two brothers Melvin (Lois, Debbie (Jason Kolaski), Wendy (Ron Haynes) of Winnipeg), and Morley (Pat, Sandra (Ken), Gary & Greg (Etta) of B.C. and Texas), his grand nieces and nephews Melissa, Krystin, Jadyn, Lisa, Matthew, Stephanie, Kenny Ray, Larry and Greg. Ed was born in Toronto in 1936. He began his working career with his brother Morley at the London CNR car shops where they both apprenticed as painters. He spent most of his working career at Ford and retired in 1995. Ed was a great brother, uncle and friend. He was kind, funny, opinionated, stubborn, meticulous, determined and a hard worker. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix and he gave everything 150%. He'd put his head together with his brothers and there wasn't anything they couldn't do. He was just a real character at times and loved to tease all of us. I remember driving with him when we were kids and he asked Lois “turn left or right?” She said turn left, he replied “left?” She said “that's right” and of course he turned right. We all roared with laughter because he had our mom so flustered it took forever to get to our destination. He introduced us to his mini bike, boy our dad was mad we went for a ride on that thing but we loved it and our crazy uncle Ed. Ed loved to travel across the country in his trailer years ago. He had a microphone hooked up under the hood of the car and you knew when he arrived. He'd call out your name across the bay, whistle at a few cute girls or tell some guy how badly he was driving. We thought he was the best uncle a kid could have. Uncle Ed came to Jack Pine, our Island cottage in Nestor Falls, Ontario, many times with our Gran and Grandpa. Along with the rest of the family it was always 3 weeks of fun. Ed and our uncle Morley painted anything that stood still too long, boats, gas cans, outhouses, you name it. Ed introduced us to another of his passions “CB” radios. He installed a whopping huge tower beside our log cottage, assembled the enormous antenna then balanced it in a leather belt around his waist as he climbed this high tower and installed the antenna. He introduced us to a few words that day that I'm still trying hard to erase from my vocabulary. He enjoyed teaching us the “CB” lingo and everything you needed to know about “the skip being in”, such good times and great memories that we'll carry with us forever. Ed enjoyed his winters in Lakeland, Florida, with Gran, Grandpa, Mel, Barb and Lois. Until we meet again Ed you will live in our hearts and memories forever. We will think of you often in that Jack Pine in the sky where we will all meet again one day. Keep a spot for us at the table and don't forget to call us for “Happy Hour”. Send our love to Gran, Grandpa, Barbie and the rest of our clan. We Love You. Friends will be received at the Evans Funeral Home, 648 Hamilton Rd., (1 block east of Egerton) on Thursday from 2-5 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted in the chapel on Friday August 20, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Farquhar MacKinnon officiating. Interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be appreciated by the family.
