Obituary of Maria Margerete "Marg" Cook

Having led a full life, Marg passed away on Friday, December 2, 2022 at home with her family. She was 87 years-old. Maria Margerete was born in London Ontario on October 11, 1935, to Fritz and Elsa Reichel. The third of four daughters, the family lived on a small farm on Adelaide Street, south of Kipps Lane (when the city was much smaller). She attended St Lawrence (elementary) School, completing grades 3 and 4 at the same time, and skipping another grade entirely (a Reichel daughter tradition). She started high school at H.B. Beal Secondary School, transferring to Medway High School when it opened, where she graduated at age 16. After graduating, Marg began working at London’s Supertest Petroleum. Around the same time, she met Don Cook. The two were introduced by a mutual friend (i.e. it was a blind date), and Marg and Don were together for over 70 years, right until her passing this past Friday. Marg and Don were married in 1958 and briefly lived in Niagara Falls Ontario before returning to London. Together, they raised a family of three, bought a house in north London and built a cottage in the Bruce Peninsula. Although Marg suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for much of her life and would later battle breast cancer, macular degeneration, and finally vascular dementia, she carried-on and lived her life to the fullest. Don and Marg would take their three kids to Expo ‘67, the 1976 Montreal Olympics, and spend March breaks driving to South Carolina. Once the kids had left home, the two had the great fortune to travel throughout Europe, to tour the Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Seas, and made it all the way to New Zealand. She was an arduous worker for decades, working as a secretary and finishing her career as an office manager. After she retired, she volunteered her time for the store at Missions Services of London. She sang in the Trinity Lutheran Church choir for over 60 years, where she was an active member of the church. Marg was renowned for her hard work, her wholehearted laugh and her enthusiasm. She was incredibly kind to both her friends and complete strangers. Most of all, she taught us the power of perseverance and determination as she quietly fought her many health challenges. Marg is survived by her husband Donald Cook, sisters Hilda Petch and Barb Hamilton, children Cathy Lowery (Glen), Nancy King (Dave) and Tim Cook. Marg adored and was adored by her four grandchildren, Michael Lowery (Mariana), Laura Lowery, Kyle Lowery and Katie King. She is predeceased by her sister Lorraine Miklautz. A service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 746 Colborne Street (at the corner of Oxford and Colborne streets), on Wednesday December 7 at 11am. Visitation will start at 10am and the service will be followed by a reception. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mission Services of London. Donations will help fund the store voucher program, which provides basic clothing and household goods to London’s most vulnerable individuals.
