On behalf of the Sacher family (Jana, Helena, and parents Jaroslav and Frances Sacher),I would like to express our sincere sympathy to the Shanfeld family. Brian was a dear friend, actually the best friend to myself and my sister Helena when we came to Canada in 1969, while attending Wheeble Highschool. Brian took us "under his wing", explaining to us the things we needed to know about our new country, teaching us local idioms that were not previously part of our English languge education, etc. Brian was a "natural" teacher. He was also very interested in European history, culture and sports, especially in hockey. He was a graet athlete himself - we enjoyed watching him play hockey and tennis. Brian posessed a great intellect and love of life, which was evident in our many discussions, philosophical exchanges and political analysis. We will however remember Brian the most as a person with a big heart: a young man who took our mother shopping for groceries before we had a car, a young man who tried to cheer us up in hard times, who spent many hours with us - sharing many stories and laughs as well. He was a kind person of many talents, and it was sad to see him struggle with life in his later years as his health deteriorated. Rest in peace our dear friend. We will never forget you. Jana Korol

We are so sorry to learn of the loss of Leon's brother. The world is a smaller place because of his passing, and we know that he will be in your hearts for the rest of your lives, and that his good works will live on to commemorate his life. May you find comfort in remembering your time with him.

I met Brian in March of 2011 while I was at Kensington as a student of the PSW program I was enrolled in at Wheable. Brian was the first resident that I had been assigned to. Over the next few months I grew to understand and respect him for his incredble intelligence, knowledge of music and a common love of sports, especially baseball. I tried to make sure that everyday that I was with Brian that we would find a way to share a smile. Brian was a great "teacher" while I was learning and perfecting my skills as a PSW. I am sadened to hear of his passing and wanted to share how he made a difference in my life with you. How I work today as a health care provider is, in a large way, due to Brian. My deepest condolences to his family. I will never forget him and will continue to work in a way to help put smiles on the faces of those I work for. Richard~

Leon, my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your brother Brian, it saddens me deeply to read of his passing. I lived next door to your parents at Mrs.Graungaards, and Brian and I and several from the neighborhood would chill at Hooper's Booth across the street, Brian was always polite and humourous, and would invite me often to share a meal with your parents Sam and Becky, two wonderful people that I remember fondly to this day, and the fabulous meals your mother would offer up, plus great conversations. May Brian, and your parents always R.I.P. God Bless them, till that day when we all meet again. Brian is now in a better place, eternal peace. May God give you comfort in the trying days ahead. Sincerely, Geoff Peterson

Dear Shanfeld Family, Words cannot express my sorrow on hearing the news that Brian had died. He was a student easily remembered. He stood out from the crowd with his individuality and great intelligence. I remember that he did not easily subject himself to mindless authority and always stood out with his strong will. What a pity! It is always so hard for us old war horses to see students die before their time while we hang on uselessly. George Reintjes, teacher of Physical Education, Mathematics and Football Coach, G. A. Wheable, 1962-1978.
