Obituary of George Peter Gettas

George Peter Gettas was born in Kitchener-Waterloo on June 27, 1913 and passed away peacefully on June 4, 2005 in London, Ontario. His early years were spent in Simcoe before attending London Central Collegiate Institute and then the University of Western Ontario, graduating in 1938 from the Faculty of Medicine. He specialized as a surgeon in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat at Columbia University/St. Luke's, New York City, then served as Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during the Second World War. Afterwards, he returned to London where he both was in private practice and instructed at the University of Western Ontario. He is survived by his children, George and his wife, Marsha of Toronto; Phillip of New York City; Diane Haggis of London and Gregg of New York City. Grandfather of Marisa and Griffin Gettas of Toronto; Alissa and Katie Haggis of Los Angeles; Lauren Haggis of New York City. He leaves behind his beloved sister, Irene Gettas on Ingonish, Nova Scotia and his former wife, Theo Gettas of London. The family would like to express their appreciation to Virginia Frank and Terry Cottrill, both of London, for their kind support for the past many years. Peter loved sports and at 14 years of age, played on a men's baseball team while attending highschool. During the 1930's while playing basketball for Western in the inter-university league against McGill, Queens and University of Toronto, he was the tallest player in the league. He was also interested in photography, fishing and a past member of Sunningdale Golf and Country Club and the London Curling Club. A service will be held in Peter's honour conducted by Father Elias at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 133 Southdale Road West (3 lights east of Wonderland Road), on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, tributes may be made to the University Hospital.
