Obituary of Murray Hyman Leff
Murray H. Leff, ACCI ("Mr. G.M.S.") passed away in Atlanta, Georgia while visiting family on Saturday, January 30, 2016.
He was a devoted husband to Stella for sixty years, beloved father of Steven and Karen, Vivian and Randy Maxwell, Kathy, and Nanci Frank and special "Big Daddy" to Rachel, Sarah, Samantha, Harris, Carly, Bram, Perri, Loni, Taska, Kaleb, Alex, Nick, and to poodles Kramer and Sophie.
Murray was born in London, Ontario on February 21, 1926 - the only child of Israel and Anna Leff. Educated at South Collegiate and Central Secondary School, he owned and operated the first television store in London (Leff’s TV) and subsequently established G.M.S. Mortgage Investment Corporation. While raising his family, he became an accredited real estate appraiser to enhance his role in the mortgage field and took a serious role in overseeing his friends and investors’ financial affairs. He was past president of the Real Estate Appraisers of Ontario, B’nai Brith London Lodge #1012, and Or Shalom Cemetery Committee and was an active member of the Or Shalom Synagogue Board of Governors and the London Jewish Community Foundation. As an avid bowler and golfer, Murray loved drinking red wine, listening to Big Band music, watching boxing matches, throwing parties, and traveling with family and friends. His trademark was a brush cut, bowtie, white shirt, and writing in green-ink pen. Loved and admired by his friends and family, he will be dearly missed.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday February 3, 2016 at 1:30 PM at Or Shalom Synagogue, 534 Huron St., London, Ont. with Rabbi Howard Hoffman officiating. Internment at Or Shalom cemetery in London. Following the internment, guests are invited back to the synagogue for a Meal of Consolation.
Shiva will be held at the Leff residence, Unit 34 – 2014 Valleyrun Blvd., London beginning Wednesday afternoon following the Meal of Consolation, Thursday from 11:00 AM onward and Friday from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Evening services Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 PM. After Shabbat, shiva will continue at the home of Vivian and Randy Maxwell, 5 Ashdown Cres., Richmond Hill, Ont. Visiting Saturday February 6 after 7:00 PM, Sunday and Monday from 1:00 PM onward. Evening services Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 7:30 PM. A tree will be planted as a living memorial to Murray Leff.
