We were both very very sorry to hear of Phyllis's passing. She had such a bright and terrier-like intelligence about her, always curious, always eagerly pushing forward a little bit more, a little bit more. And there was always something to talk about with her, to discuss, argue about, enquire into. We saw her last at Janice's opening in Museum London, where she showed up of course, not letting the cancer stop her, not wanting to miss a thing, and not wanting Janice to think she'd missed the show. I'm sure someone will say that she was "a patron of the arts"which is true, but it would make her sound like someone wealthy and distant, when in fact she was anything but distant. And she would have been part of the same scene if she'd been poorher curiousity and intelligence paid for her admittance. We're most sorry for Alan, who has lost his best friend. She lived well, and fully, and never wasted the life that was allotted her. All the best in a bad time to all of you. -Andy and Janice

Yesterday - looking at artist Susanna Heller's installation notes from the 1980s, we saw inscribed beside red dots on the drawing chart- Phyllis Cohen's name - she had bought a few of Susanna's drawings from that early exhibit in London. It was such a heart felt moment to see that bit of ephemera at Museum London - revealing the ever-present Phyllis in our lives - over so many decades...even as a kid - our mom used to take us to shop at Young Canada, the children's department store that she was a partner in with Alan that was on Richmond Street. It's a profound loss it is hard to believe we have lost such a vital friend and force in our city and one who cared so much for our community in so many ways. Our deepest condolences to Alan and family. Jamelie Hassan and Ron Benner

Dear Susan, I was very sorry to hear that your mother has passed away. Phyllis was a wonderful woman, vibrant and energetic, and always genuinely interested to hear what others were up to. I had a long relationship with her in the art world. Whenever we were at a function, she would come right up to me and ask what I was doing, etc. I admired her very much and will miss her sparkling, stylish presence, as so many of us who were lucky to know her will. My sincere condolences to you, your father and Matthew, as well as all the rest of your family. Joanne

This is such very sad news. I can't think of the Department of Visual Arts without thinking of the supportive presence of you both -- at openings, ArtLab meetings and the Cohen Explorations program. We can't thank you enough for all your support over the past few years. Phyllis was such a bright and optimistic light for all of us. Her wonderful eye for detail and unfailingly insightful observations about any and all works of art will be sorely missed. Thanks to both of you, a young generation of artists has got a good start in life and will make the world a better place. My heart goes out to you. We were so very fortunate to have Phyllis as a member of our community for the last two decades. It was a great privilege to know her.
