Obituary of Tula Jane Mandas
Tula Jane Mandas passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2011, at Marian Villa – Mount Hope, in her 96th year.
She remained sharp, illness free and willing to share a laugh through her life. Tula was the last member of her family. She was born in London, Ont. On August 15, 1916, the only daughter of the late Peter and Augustina (Prokos) Mandas, both of Greece. She never married. Her Father and Mother came from Greece at the turn of the Century, met and married in Canada. They became one of the founding families in the London Greek Community with Augustina holding the position of President of the Greek Ladies Society (1951). Her parents were very active within the Greek community all their lives.
In 1908 Peter along with his brother Gus Mandas purchased The Olympia Candy Works at 186 Dundas St. from Mr. Pantelis Karkampasis (the first Greek family to live in London). Peter continued to own and operate The Olympia until it closed at the end of 1949. Tula is predeceased by her brothers Peter and Phillip. Tula worked first for the family business and then as a bookkeeper for Cronyn, Pocock & Robinson Insurance Co. until her retirement. She was a member of the Philoptochos Ladies Society.
She is survived by her 1st Cousin, Lynda (Prokos) Watson of London, her God-Daughter and 2nd Cousin, Judy Gilson of London, her 1st Cousin, Peter Harkas of London and sister-in-law, Helen Mandas of Charlotte, North Carolina. Also by her 2nd cousins, Michelle Madge, and Michael Barrett of Toronto, Robin Watson, Susan Stucke and Nancy Watson of London and George Loupos and Peter Loupos of Sarnia and their families.
We would sincerely like to thank the nursing staff on the 2nd Floor of Marian Villa for their care and kindness to Tula.
