My four beautiful children pictured here would not be in my life if it wasn't for the skilled hands of Dr. Sales. Thank you for all the amazing things you've done. Rest in peace.

My sincere condoliences to all the Sales Family.
I can honestly say with commitment, that Dr Jack Sales honed me into the Urologic Surgeon I am today.
As a Resident, you either loved or hated him....I the former. Yes he was hard on residents, persistent that every movement and surgical cut was precise, and if you listened to him, and practiced his style of Surgery, you became a very accomplished Urologist. In achieving confidence, and adhering to sound surgical principles, you developed the lifelong ability to achieve new goals/learn new procedures and remain current. We never had time scheduled to read books, etc, doing this after long days of OR and call. And yet the the work ethic was set.
I never thought I could work harder than I did in London, until I arrived in Windsor. The first few years here I was available 24/7 and as Dr Sales would attest to, I could never turn a case down, or away. I call it my Windsor Fellowship. Needless to say, without Resident Staff these were gruelling years, but I matured, knowing well that Dr Sales would be proud of me! And he was, many times sharing stories/feats together.
I can still remember my first rotation as a junior urology resident at St Joseph's Hospital, where I was the only Resident for a month until the Senior Resident arrived. Dr Sales and I were doing patient rounds when we came upon a young man who had just undergone a Radical Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection for Testis Cancer and had developed a Lymphatic Leak with chylous fluid leaking and causing him a prolonged Ileus. Having reviewed the literature I had started him on Total Parenteral Nutrition, after approaching Surgical Colleagues, infusing all lipids/proteins intravenously and keeping the patient on prolonged NG Drainage to keep the bowel at rest. Since this was a very rare complication, Dr Sales looked at me perplexed, and I indicated the merits of the infusion and explained the rationale. The patient responded appropriately, and was discharged uneventfully. Having undertaken this measure, I gained Dr Sales Respect, and from then forward throughout my training we developed a great realtionship and mutual respect. I never feared him, and we often laughed together. I learned immeasurably and made me the Surgeon I am today! Jack I truly thank you for your mentoring.
Jack we will all miss you. Rest in peace and continue to look down over us. I hope we all make you proud.
Respectfully,
Ronald B Sorensen/Windsor

My sincere and hearfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, and countless trainees whose lives were touched by Dr. Sales.
There are some teachers whose impact extends far beyond the academic syllabus, or in our case, the surgical procedures. They not only train us in our craft but shape us as individuals. They build our character, sculpting us to be the best version of ourselves. Dr. Jack Sales was one such individual. He was not just a mentor; he was an architect of character, a moulder of minds, and a guardian of the sanctity of our noble profession.Dr. Sales was a stalwart in the field of urology, and his contributions to St. Joseph's hospital and the entire Canadian medical landscape cannot be understated. His professional life was dedicated to cultivating a cadre of competent, confident, and compassionate urologists. He instilled in us the importance of precision, patience, and perseverance. His famous sayings, like "If you do everything twice, the operation takes you twice as long" or "This is how airplane crashes happen," were not just witty remarks. They were profound principles that resonated with the ethos of surgical discipline and vigilance. They were his unique way of encapsulating complex concepts into simple, memorable nuggets of wisdom.
His philosophy was not about making things easy for us. Instead, he preferred to make us strong. He was hard on us because he cared. He believed that this was the path to excellence and to preserving the highest standards of patient care. But while he was stringent with us in the training rooms, he was our fiercest advocate outside of them. He had an unwavering belief in our capabilities, and he made sure that we knew it.The last operation I performed under his watchful eye, a seemingly simple circumcision on a child, was a testament to his commitment to teaching. He emphasized that even the simplest procedures deserved our utmost respect and demanded our highest skill. He watched me quietly, his presence felt more than seen. When I finished, he whispered, "I think I have died and gone to heaven." It was at that moment I realized I had graduated from being a trainee to a urologist, ready to take on the world.
As I ventured into my community practice, I always found myself asking, "What would Dr. Sales do?" It was a compass that guided me through the most challenging decisions and intricate surgeries. And it's a habit that remains with me today.Dr. Sales, you have left an indelible mark on my life, one that I humbly try to pass on to the younger generations of urologists. Today, as I pay tribute to you, I know that the best way to honor you is by living up to the high standards you set and by continuing to carry forward the torch of knowledge, skill, and integrity you have passed on to us.
I extend my deepest condolences to his family. The loss is profound and the void irreplaceable. Dr. Sales was more than just a surgeon; he was a visionary, a mentor, and a friend. He was a beacon of light in the vast world of urology and his legacy will continue to illuminate our path for generations to come. May his soul rest in peace.

To the family of Dr. Sales we extend our sincerest condolences. In 1986 we met Dr. Sales when our first child Colleen was a couple of months old, and we saw him at many more appointments & procedures later at Clinton Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital. Our daughter needed surgery, bi-lateral ureteral implants, and Dr. Sales hoped to hold off on the surgery until Colleen was at least two. Unfortunately her condition worsened with infections that became resistant to nearly all the antibiotics available.
On February 23, 1988 Dr. Sales and his wonderful team of Dr. Slater, Dr. Singh, and Dr. Humble performed the surgery on 18 month old Colleen. I remember Dr. Sales saying prior to the surgery that she would be his youngest patient to have this procedure, but she was tall for her age and that would be helpful to her outcome. We are so grateful for Dr. Sales' expertise and his caring calm bedside manner. That was the first thing I noticed about him at our first appointment: he had so much patience for answering a scared mother's questions. Colleen ended up in hospital at age 15 with a cyst on her kidney, and our family was due to go to the UK with our daughters and the Marching Band they belonged to. Dr. Sales kindly offered me his home phone number in case we had to see a doctor while away. His kindness will never be forgotten by us. May you rest in peace now Dr. Sales. Heaven has certainly gained a wonderful Angel.

Memories are pictures in your mind pictures that can make you both happy and sad. One such memory was last summer , while staying at our beloved cottage on the Severn River, a cottage where family and friends enjoy special times. Jack came for dinner one night with Lisa , Brad and another good friend Neville. We shared a meal on the deck overlooking the water, laughing , exchanging stories and feeling blessed that we had this amazing opportunity to be together. You see , three men, 2 in the winter of their lives and one quite young would not have this opportunity again. Jack, , my husband Bill and Neville all passed away since that exceptional time last summer.
Jack, a man I only knew from the cottage, captured your attention immediately, not because he was a renowned doctor, not because he was a world wide speaker at conferences but just because he was a person you could sit down and have a regular talk with. He listened! A few years ago , before Jack got his cochlear implants he was as deaf as my Bill. Watching the 2 of them carry on a conversation was comical. Lip reading became the norm.
My final memory about this talented man was the use of his hands. No doubt a gifted surgeon, giving many people a second chance of life following surgery, hands that performed procedures that for most of us would be considered a miracle. It is these same hands , these miracle hands, that designed and built out of wood from the cottage many birdhouses. They were not intricate, nor complex buildings , but rather humble in their design. But the architect, Jack, put his creative mind into a project that made both himself happy as well as ourselves. We were fortunate to be one of the recipients of Jack’s birdhouses. It remains in our garden at the cottage surrounded by the beauty of the land. His hands were a blessing in so many ways.
These are my memories, my pictures, my blessings!

The very first time this past year that I have ever been to Grand Bend , Dr Jack and I sat beside his beautiful fireplace with a rather large fire in it, a man after my own heart! We had such a lovely chat about his love for his home and his family. He had this twinkle in his eye when he was about to get up to no good! Like sneaking into the kitchen to get some chocolate. I have a wonderful few days with Dr Jack and Lisa truly a special memory for me!

We are so saddened to hear of your Dad’s passing. We have countless wonderful memories of your Dad at the Furtney Family Cottage. One of our favourite memories is the morning we were up very early and had one-on-one time with Jack on the porch. He shared his memories of childhood and growing up to follow his passion. He made us coffee (which we later found out was decaf!).
We’re sorry we won’t be back in Canada in time to support you this weekend. Sending love, prayers and big hugs to you all.

We are so sorry for your loss. Dr. Sales was a beloved member of the St. Joseph's Urology family. He maintained a keen interest in the work of the program, and we were delighted to indulge him in making a visit to see the latest technology, hear of advances in the clinical program, or to meet the students. His impact on the St. Joseph's Urology program was legendary, and left an indelible mark on the field of urology and on our hospital's history.
