Obituary of Philip Thomas Mitches

Philip Thomas Mitches of London passed away June 30, 2023 in his 87th year. Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Angelica Mitches and brother George (Jane). Dear father of Nichola (John), Thane (Jennifer) and Andria (Jason). Loving and devoted grandfather of Ophelia, Aria and Nova. Survived by sister Kay (Bill) and brother Peter (June).

Philip called London home for all his years. He was a proud member of the Greek community, with roots going back to the beginning of the Greek Orthodox Church being established in London.

He proudly served in the Canadian Military as a Captain in the Royal Signal Core. He went to China in the 1960s to develop international computer transmissions, contributing to what we know today as the Internet. He worked for the Attorney General’s Office in Ottawa.

He was a prominent patent and trademark lawyer. He also served on the Board of Directors for London Victoria Hospital.

Philip had a sharp wit and a brilliant mind with an aptitude and lifelong passion for science, math and politics.

Philip was fun loving, and a family man at heart. He had a great sense of humour, and those around him were easily amused and entertained by his stories. He was spontaneous and had a childlike playfulness. His children will always remember the dancing in the rain; the ice skating on the tennis court in the backyard that he tirelessly created year after year; midnight grocery shopping in pyjamas; the Humchoo; flying kites in Mitches park; making ice cream the old fashioned way; lamb roasts; bonfires down the Back-Hill; and tobogganing on Rolleys. We thank him for showing us how to laugh and how to have wacky fun in the most ordinary days and we take this with us into our own families.

He loved his community, and was loved by his children, grandchildren and those closest to him, and he will be missed by many.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Sunday July 23rd at Logan Funeral Home, 371 Dundas Street (between Waterloo and Colborne Streets), London, with visitation 1 hour prior.

Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Philip are asked to consider the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
