Hi my name is Linda Wong and I am the eldest child of Mae and Ted Wong. I am speaking on behalf of my family which include my siblings, Peter, Judy and Faye and our father Ted.
It is an honour to stand before you and share precious memories of our mother.
Our mom grew up in Gongdong, China. She excelled in math and sciences and she was great at sports, especially basketball. At the age of 23, mom left her family home to start her new life in Canada with our father.
Our father came to Strathroy Ontario in 1951 and 5 years later there were new immigration laws that allowed all Chinese Canadian citizens to bring their fiancés to Canada to get married. Our mom bravely came to Canada on her own to be married in 1957.
Our father worked in a restaurant in Strathroy from the time he came to Canada until 1963. The two of them then went to Glencoe, a small town of 2500, where they opened a restaurant together. I was only 5 years old at the time, Peter was 3, and my sister Judy was born that year in Glencoe. Faye who is the baby of the family was also born in Glencoe. My parents worked very hard, long days and then after over 20 years there they spent a couple years in Toronto and finally settled in London, Ontario in 1986, where they retired and spent the last 40 years.
Our mom was a strong, private person, and her priority in life was making sure her family was well loved, cared for and safe. She adored her children and all her grandchildren, and her final words were I love my family, I love my children.
Our mom will be missed by all, but her memory will live on in us forever. We love you so much, mom, and we will miss you more than words can say.
