Obituary
Obituary of Alec Richmond
We are very sad to announce that Alec Richmond passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at the age of 90.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Joy, his parents, Samuel (Shia) and Esther Richmond, his sisters, Judy Zane (Manny) and Lee Colman. He leaves behind daughters, Susan and Nina (Martin Ross), granddaughters, Hannah and Isabel Ross, extended family including three special nieces, Sharon and Caroline Zane and Jill Brandes and their families, sister-in-law, Gail Marchitto, and Michael and Kelley Ross and their families.
Alec lived his whole life in London, Ontario except while attending Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto. He was called to the Bar in 1948. Alec was a well known and respected real estate lawyer in London for 37 years.
He was also a man of diverse interests. Performing was in his blood. He started acting in university and continued into his adult life at London Little Theatre. He co-hosted "The World Around Us" with the late Mike Woodward on CFPL-TV, and other documentary programs. He hosted a movie review show, Movie Classics, on WQLN-TV (PBS) in Erie. He most loved to sing and, and in his later years, had numerous gigs at La Casa, Aroma and Marienbad with his musical companions, Art Covey and the late Doug Keenan. Alec loved photography, and developed an extensive collection of slides of family, friends and the many trips he and Joy took all over the world.
In his early years he was an ardent supporter of the CCF and NDP, running federally for each in 1954 and 1968, respectively. Alec was a man of great integrity, honesty, generosity and humour. A socialist by nature, he taught his children that all people, whatever their socio-economic status, race or culture, should be respected and treated as equals. Throughout his life, he practiced what he preached.
Special thanks to the extraordinary staff at Richmond Woods and at University Hospital, to Maria Ribeiro and to his recent and dedicated companion, Nola Crawford.
